Innovation Lab

Building practical ideas into responsible systems.

A working space for digital health, civic technology, financial planning, public health intelligence and applied AI projects shaped by evidence, user needs and African implementation realities.

Active projects

Working prototypes open to review.

These projects are presented as evolving MVPs, not finished or approved operational systems.

Civic technology and community infrastructure

FixMyArea

A live pilot for reporting potholes, broken streetlights, drainage, waste and other public issues with photo evidence and a map location. Residents can support existing reports and follow progress, while provisioned organization teams can record action and resolution evidence.

Collaboration call: Local government practitioners, utilities, community organizations, NGOs, engineers and GIS specialists can help define response ownership, verification and a focused pilot. No institutional adoption is claimed.

Illustrative institutional team reviewing an annual plan and budget Evolving MVP

Financial planning and budget intelligence

BudgetIQ AI

BudgetIQ began with a practical challenge: turn an annual action plan into an editable institutional budget. Bismark Adams's research on Ghanaian fiscal forecasting sharpened its approach to revised estimates, actual results and honest forecast testing. The evolving MVP connects activity costs, funding decisions, procurement review and financial evidence.

Collaboration call: Budget officers, accountants, procurement practitioners, researchers and data scientists can review the case study and help test costing rules, approval paths and forecast methods. Institutions with permission to share historical approved budgets, revisions and actual results can help design a careful evaluation. Privacy and data access must be agreed before any records are shared.

Machine learning and model governance

Loan Portfolio Lab

A full stack model explorer rebuilt from a Streamlit prototype. The new API maps all 19 saved model features, validates fictional scenarios and presents the historical not fully paid score with clear limitations. Seeking data, model risk, fairness and usability collaborators for reproducible evaluation.

A guided workspace that turns local visibility, reviews, competitor observations and marketing audits into clearer priorities for small businesses.

Development pathway

From problem discovery to responsible pilot.

  1. 01Discover

Define the practical problem with the people affected by it.

  2. 02Research

Review workflows, evidence, risks and implementation constraints.

  3. 03Prototype

Build the smallest useful model of the proposed solution.

  4. 04Review

Invite technical, clinical, ethical and user feedback.

  5. 05Test

Evaluate usability, security and performance in a controlled setting.

  6. 06Improve

Use evidence from testing to guide the next iteration.

Open challenges

Strong systems need multidisciplinary scrutiny.

The lab welcomes constructive review that can improve safety, usefulness and implementation readiness.

Clinical and public health review

Validate fields, screening rules, referral pathways and reporting indicators.

Privacy, security and governance

Strengthen consent, access control, auditability and responsible data exchange.

Interoperability and engineering

Review architecture, standards, reliability and integration pathways.

Usability and evaluation

Design realistic user testing, pilot measures and accessibility improvements.

BudgetIQ research and finance review

Review the research-informed case study, test costing and procurement controls, and help define a permitted dataset of approved budgets, revisions and actual results for out-of-sample forecast checks.

FixMyArea community pilot

Help define jurisdiction, issue verification, moderation and response ownership. Review report usability and evidence of resolution with residents and local service teams.

Loan Portfolio Lab model evaluation

Recover the data and reproduce performance, calibration and subgroup checks before considering any operational use.

Collaborate

Bring your expertise to the work.

Clinicians, nurses, public health professionals, budget officers, accountants, procurement specialists, model risk reviewers, researchers, engineers, data scientists, privacy specialists and local government practitioners, utilities, community organizations, GIS specialists and implementation partners are welcome to propose a focused contribution.

Contributor acknowledgements will be added with permission and a clear description of each person’s role.

Responsible innovation

Prototype status matters.

Projects in this lab are exploratory MVPs. They are not substitutes for professional judgement and should not be used as approved clinical or operational systems without appropriate validation, privacy and security assessment, usability testing, governance approval and controlled pilot evaluation.
